Durham Markets is backing a Brilliant Bank Holiday Monday

Durham Markets Company is running two events that will make the Bank Holiday Weekend in Durham a fabulous opportunity to families to enjoy all the city has to offer!

In the run up to the weekend, on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th August, Durham Children’s Book Festival returns.  The event is free for families to enjoy, and features author and illustrator workshops in the Market Place, a Treasure Trail around the city centre, circus skills workshops, costumed characters, free facepainting and more.  Now in its third year, Durham Children’s Book Festival gives youngsters the chance to meet authors and illustrators face to face, with seven of the region’s most exciting children’s writers joining the event.

On Bank Holiday Monday, Durham Classic Car Show returns.  This brings over a hundred classic cars into the city centre, with cars displayed on Framwellgate and Elvet Bridges, in Millennium Place, in the Market Place and in front of the Cathedral on Palace Green.  Another family friendly event which is free to attend, Durham Classic Car show gives visitors the opportunity to chat with the owners, and to photograph and video often rare vehicles.

Alice Wilkes, Marketing and Administration Manager for Durham Market says the company is proud to be promoting and organising these two events again this year.  She commented: “We’re coming to the end of the school holidays, and maybe the kids are a little bored and looking for something completely different to do.  These two events are geared up for families, they’re free to attend and, we hope, give visitors something a bit different to enjoy.

“And while you’re in the city of Durham, make the most of it.  The Market Hall and an Outdoor Market will be open for both events.  Why not visit some of the cafes and restaurants in the city centre while you’re here, or indeed see the Gaia artwork exhibited in Durham Cathedral?  For these events, many organisations and businesses are working together to encourage people into the city of Durham, and we hope that anyone who comes really makes a day of it!”
